Here at the University of Cyprus, we work on the design and implementation of the core middleware architecture.
For the AsTeRICS platform, we chose a component-based approach, as it allows to model real hardware sensors with software plug-ins.
This architecture offers a standardized interface for modeling any Assistive Technology device, such as BCI headsets and 3-D mice. These devices can in turn be graphically represented in designer tools allowing for quick and easy prototyping of AT applications.
AsTeRICS is truly important as it aims to render custom Assistive Technology affordable to end-users.
But the project also has great pedagogical value.
With its graphical-based designer tools it allows to quickly and easily prototype applications in real-time. This is invaluable in terms of engaging students and stimulating their interest.
